San Dieguito is a small reservoir in the middle of Rancho Santa Fe.
I was told residents used to hunt waterfowl here 50 years ago.
The entire lake is encircled by a fence, as it stores water for drinking.
Despite the fence, the reservoir is a scenic treasure in a luxury setting.
Rancho Santa Fe was a railroad tree farm 100 years ago,
raising eucalyptus for railroad ties. When that didn't work out,
the railroad company turned 6000 acres into an
upscale development of homes for Hollywood types
spending their weekends at Caliente and Del Mar horse racing tracks.
The area is still rural and horsey. The covenants here assure
almost every home is on septic system rather than sewers,
there's just one post office with no home mail delivery,
and yet home prices average about $500 a square foot.
